Sweetie's emotional volatility and physical destructiveness (ruining Kay's clothes, breaking furniture) reflects the disruption she has caused her family. Throughout the film, there are flashbacks to Sweetie dancing, singing and performing small, circus-like tricks with Gordon's assistance. Gordon chooses to ignore Sweetie's mental illness and erratic, childish behavior because he loves her and thinks of her as a child. After an absence, Sweetie returns home with her drug-addicted lover and "manager" Bob she then proceeds to intimidate, control, and abuse the other members of her family. However, the couple's relationship begins to show signs of strain, with Kay uprooting and hiding a tree Louis attempts to plant in their yard because she feels a deep foreboding about it. Kay loves Louis because the words of a fortune teller portended she would end up with him. Their parents, Flo and Gordon, are having serious marital problems. The story focuses on a dysfunctional Australian family that includes two daughters: Dawn (nicknamed "Sweetie") a lively, often delusional woman who fancies herself an actor, and her thin, sullen, superstitious sister Kay, a factory worker who has a boyfriend named Louis. It was entered into the 1989 Cannes Film Festival and won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film in 1991. It was Jane Campion's first feature film. Co-written by Campion and Gerard Lee, the film documents the contentious and chaotic relationships among a woman in her twenties, her parents, and her emotionally unstable sister. There’s crude humor and running gags plus lots of blood and crazy murders (and other deaths) along the way. If you enjoy horror comedies, then Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It is exactly the kind of movie that should work for you. In fact, the only other movie from Kazakhstan that I’ve watched is the really amazing and heartbreaking Welcome to the USA when it premiered at AFI Fest 2019 before going on to play film festivals worldwide. I haven’t watched many movies from Kazakhstan so I wasn’t sure of the style or production quality. ![]() I had no idea what to expect from Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It. However, all you really need to know is that this film works really well. Now, this new movie doesn’t reach that level of genius. With elements of The Loved Ones and a touch of The Hunt, the characters these three friends encounter are pretty damn wacky! During the beginning of Sweetie, You Won’t Believe It, I even found myself thinking of the amazing One Cut of the Dead from Japan. Of course, this is when everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. None of them have gone fishing before, but that isn’t the point. In order to maintain some form of sanity, he decides to go fishing with his two best friends. ![]() In this film, our main protagonist is being constantly attacked by his very pregnant wife and trying his best to be a good husband. Of course, it isn’t just film that has a universal language but rather the stories told on film. ![]()
